With the Holidays soon upon us, many people are already talking about cutting back and eating better before the Holidays. My friend Julie is a big advocate of healthy eating. She has been talking to me about Sandra’s Cafe and Health Food Store for a few months now. I decided to go on and check out this place.

Let me start out by saying, it was not at all what I expected it to be. So much better than what I envisioned.

As I entered the Cafe side, there was a large case with fresh produce all organic. Everything from squash, tomatoes, zucchini, mushrooms, grapes, etc. Beautiful produce and reasonably priced. Produce is delivered twice a week.

I like that there was a section of Local Produce. It is a great thing when we support local.

Need help finding supplements? Have no fear, the staff at Sandra is very knowledgeable and helpful. There was a constant flow of people coming in and out during my time there.

Sandra’s has a wide variety of supplements, natural and organic food. Everything from drinks, to snacks to vitamins. Nutritional products, organic meat, skin care products. You can do all your shopping right there with Sandra’s.

All of the products are free of artificial flavors, sweeteners, preservatives or trans-fats. One plus in my eye is the fact that there was a full case of drinks without nothing artificial.
I arrived before the lunch rush, so I choose the window seat. A little natural light was coming in and I could see everyone coming in and out. Very nice seating area. The dining area overflowed into an outside area. There is outdoor seating as well.
I started with the Vegetable Lasagna with Carrots and Mustard Greens.  The Lasagna was Gluten Free. The vegetables in the Lasagna was zucchini, squash and mushrooms. Topped with fresh parsley. A very good veggie dish. Though it didn’t consist of meat, I didn’t really miss it. Very good. All organic ingredients.

The Chicken Shawarma is what I tried next. The plate was beautiful. Many different components, Chicken, Carrots, cilantro, hummus, lentil rice and tabouli.  Superb dish with lots of flavor. The lentil rice was very interesting, my first time eating, but it won’t be my last. Delicious.

The photo below is the Mahi Mahi topped with tomatillo and pineapple salsa, placed on a bed of quinoa pilaf. Served with corn-maque-choux, chard and a corn muffin. Wow. My favorite dish. You can eat healthy without sacrificing flavor. The tomatillo and pineapple salsa was superb and married well with the Mahi Mahi.

I also tried the Turkey Burger with Jalapeno. The burger was dressed with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, organic cheese and mayo. Really good. That turkey burger was very tasty.  The meat was all-natural and grass fed. The bun was organic as well. I will say, you couldn’t even tell. My only complaint is presentation wise, I think it could have looked better. But that didn’t take away from the taste.

For dessert, I tried the Organic Oatmeal Pecan Chocolate Chip. I was a little skeptical and wondered if it was going to be good. It was a delectable, crunchy cookie. I love cookies and milk. The waitress offered me some milk. This made me laugh, because she was reading my mind.
After eating the cookie, it was nice to know that I didn’t have to worry about counting the calories of that cookie. The cookies are prepared with different types of flour, almond or coconut.

The Cafe caters to everyone. Healthier options menu changes often, so there is always something different to try.

Overall I was extremely pleased with what I saw and tasted. The food was so good. We are sometimes afraid to try healthier items, but this place provides delicious healthy food. The food is served with a smile. A very pleasant staff, who were both knowledgeable, friendly and offered wonderful customer service.
