A few months ago, I had the opportunity to meet with the owners of the new restaurant, The Sizzling Monkey. I was honored to be able to enjoy a private, preview of their menu. My time with the couple was quite refreshing and intriguing.

The vision for The Sizzling Monkey is fresh, new and fun.

The name of the restaurant is very interesting. One of the first questions I asked was why the name The Sizzling Monkey? Ashley Mouton has loved monkey’s since she was a child. She said when they began to talk about the name of the restaurant, she knew Monkey had to be a part of the name. Hence, The Sizzling Monkey.

The name The Sizzling Monkey is very playful, relaxed and laid back.

Mr. Winston is the name of the Monkey that is sort of the Mascot for the restaurant. Ashley had a custom piece of art was designed specifically for the restaurant. I didn’t see the painting in person but I saw a picture of it and it will be an eye catcher.

Ashley is  a visionary and knows exactly what she wants. She is very driven and works hard to get to the goal.

Ashley has been in the industry for about 16 years. So she knows her stuff when it comes to restaurants and running a successful business.

As we walked through the building, it was being converted into a newer, clean, elegant restaurant. Her taste and the design of the restaurant was impeccable. I can’t wait to see the final transformation.

Now that you know a little about The Sizzling Monkey, let’s check out the food. Above is the dish, Mr. Winston. This dish consisted of a toasted french bread that was topped with a made from scratch boudin patty, ham, poached egg, bacon, a homemade hollandaise sauce and green onions.

A superb dish. The boudin patty was well seasoned. The hollandaise sauce was so good. All the components on this dish married so well together. A must try!

Mr. Winston will be available on their brunch menu. Brunch will be on Saturdays and Sundays. The brunch will be a Cajun/Creole Brunch menu with live Music.

Below is the Oyster plate. The dish consist of 3 different style of Oysters. The Firehouse, The Buffalo and The Raw.

The Firehouse was oysters topped with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños and bacon. Wow! Oh so good. Packed with heat! I loved the jalapeños on top. Nice twist.

My only complaint was that I wished my cheese was melted more. The restaurant didn’t have all their appliances the day of my tasting. So I know that its just a kink.

The Buffalo, an oyster topped with blue cheese, green onions, celery and buffalo sauce. So not what I expected. Blew me away! I am not a Blue Cheese girl, but that was scrumptious. Well balanced flavors.

The Raw was just what it said raw. You can top it with hot sauce and eat it with crackers or if you are brave go all in and chug it alone.

The oysters are served on a bed of arugula lettuce and with your own bottle of hot sauce to keep.  Love the presentation.

The Bleu Beef Surf N Turf is below. The steak was cooked medium and topped with blue cheese and the shrimp was grilled and served on a bed of Arugula lettuce. The steak was cooked well and lightly seasoned in order to balance the flavors of the blue cheese. The shrimp was seasoned and grilled to perfection.

One suggestion would be a light sauce on the shrimp and arugula. But overall the dish was incredible. A really good entree option. For the Surf and Turf you have the option of Shrimp or Scallops.

For dessert, we had the fried plantains with angel cream, vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. So so good. The plantains are made with a tempura batter with sugar. This dessert will be served as a Plantain Foster Dessert.  An excellent dessert.

Chef Blake Fontenot is designing a menu that will include housemade sauces and dishes.

One of the things that will be different about The Sizzling Monkey’s menu is that their goal is to deliver several items to the table sizzling. The menu will also include a Cuban flare consisting of original Cuban Recipes. In addition the menu will revolve around on the rock which is a Hot Stone.

The Sizzling Monkey is bringing an experience and atmosphere that will be like no other place here in Lafayette. In addition to delicious food, The Sizzling Monkey is also an Event Venue and Lounge.

The Sizzling Monkey is located at 116 East Vermillion, Lafayette, LA.
