Last week my mom was in Houston visiting for a week while my husband was out of town on business.  We had a girl’s day while the kids were at school and after a fun morning at the nail shop, it was time for lunch.

My mom loves Muffaletta sandwiches so we decided to see if Verna Mae’s would have one.

Verna Mae’s Poboy’s, Seafood & More serves New Orleans style Po-boys and dishes.

As we approached the restaurant I loved the look of the exterior.  There was a nice patio area for outdoor dining.  As we walked in we were greeted by a super friendly staff.

The menu board was behind the counter for easy viewing.  The restaurant had a very laid back feel. We felt like we were having lunch at a friend’s house.

The owner was very welcoming and helpful.  We had a few questions about the menu and she helped us willingly.

We started with the delicious Stewart Craft Soda.  We both chose the Cherry Limeade. The limeade was served in a chilled glass.  So good.

Customers place their order at the counter and the buzzer goes off when your order is ready.

To start we tried the Bourbon Street Nachos.  An Italian twist to traditional nachos.  The house-made chips were topped with Italian sausage, sliced banana peppers, black olives, Kalamata olives, mozzarella cheese and an Asiago cream sauce.

A superb appetizer.  The flavors were well balanced and I loved that the chips withstood against the cheese and wasn’t soggy.  Really good.

My mom ordered the Muffaletta Po-boy.  My mom noticed that it was a po-boy not a sandwich, she immediately asked about the bread for the muffaletta.  The owner assured her that she would love it.

She tried the po-boy and mom was pleasantly surprised how much she loved the        po-boy.  The muffaletta sandwich is a New Orleans original.  This Sicilian sandwich is covered with layers of marinated olive salad, mortadella, salami, mozzarella, ham, and provolone.

As I stated they changed it up a bit and created a Muffaletta Po-Boy!  The po-boy was delicious.  The bread was buttery and toasted and topped with all the amazing Muffaletta toppings.  They nailed this po-boy!

I ordered the Seafood Basket with half shrimp and half fried fish.  Served with onion rings, hush puppies and buttery french bread.  For dipping, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce and a special house sauce.

Great presentation of this dish.  The food was incredible.  Everything was well-seasoned and fried perfectly.

The dipping sauces added a nice element to the dish.

Verna Mae’s didn’t disappoint at all.  Everything was spot on.  The restaurant gave us a little taste of home and why we love Louisiana so much.  Ms. Verna is doing her thing at the restaurant along with her staff.

The restaurant has a homey feel.  A family environment with a chilled atmosphere. There is also TV’s if you want to watch the big game at the restaurant.

Good food, great atmosphere and a friendly staff guarantees a successful dining experience.

I’m already looking forward to visiting Verna Mae’s again.

Not into fried foods, no worries Verna Mae’s also has options for their health conscience customers on their menu.
