I am not much of a sandwich eater, but there is one sandwich that is my favorite and has been for a very long time, Monte Cristo. Bennigan’s Restaurant had the best Monte Cristo sandwich growing up. This is the spot that I first enjoyed a Monte Cristo. Many Many years later this is still one of my favorite sandwiches. The Bennigan’s in Louisiana where I used to live closed before we relocated to Texas.

Last week I was craving a Monte Cristo. There isn’t a Bennigan’s here in Houston, so that meant I needed to create my own if I wanted to eat it.

Here is my version of a Monte Cristo:

Ingredients:

  • Evangeline Maid Sliced Bread (or bread of choice)
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • Smoked ham (ultra thin sliced)
  • Oven roasted turkey breast (ultra thin sliced)
  • Swiss cheese (sliced ultra thin)
  • Mozzarella cheese (sliced)
  • Spicy Brown Mustard
  • Mayo
  • Kiss Ya Mama Cinnamon Sugar (1-2 tbsp)
  • Butter (2 tbsp)
  • Bonne Maman Raspberry Jam (for dipping sandwich)
  • Powdered sugar (dusted on top before serving)

Directions:

  1. Beat the eggs.
  2. Add in the cinnamon sugar to the eggs. Beat again. Set aside.
  3. Build your sandwich layers, you will need 3 slices of bread.
  4. Spread spicy mustard on top of the bread.
  5. Add the Swiss cheese on top of the spicy mustard, add 2 pieces of sliced turkey.
  6. Spread the Mayo on another bread, top with mozzarella cheese and 2 slices of oven roasted ham.
  7. Add another slice of bread on top of the ham side. Add more mustard and another swiss cheese, 1 turkey and 1 ham slice.
  8. Place the turkey side with the swiss cheese on top.
  9. Beat the eggs and cinnamon mixture again.
  10. Heat a skillet with butter.
  11. Dip the bread on both sides in the egg and cinnamon mixture.
  12. Brown the bread on both sides in the skillet. *Similar to making french toast.*
  13. Once browned on both sides and the cheese is melted, remove from the skillet.
  14. Place the sandwich on a plate. Cut in half.
  15. Dust with powdered sugar.
  16. Separate the halves and stack.
  17. Serve with the raspberry jam.
  18. Dip the sandwich in the raspberry jam. So so good!
  19. Enjoy!
