Our daughter is officially 17. It’s hard to believe that we are here. I can still remember her as a little girl playing with her toys. Now she’s older, driving and has a social calendar. Oh my, yes a social calendar. She is busy.

She turned 17 on last Friday but we celebrated her birthday as a family last weekend. I was not prepared for the busyness that happens once she got to High School. It started as a Freshmen but it’s different now that she’s driving herself.

Last week and this past week was crazy. Our daughter is an Athletic Trainer for the Football team at her school. So it’s Friday night lights for her every Friday even on the weeks she’s not working the game. She also had a PSAT review class on last Saturday. So we decided that we would do her birthday dinner on Saturday.

While she was gone, we set everything up for her arrival. I decorated the table and prepared her dessert. Side note this is the first birthday since Party City closed. I was a little worried but I was able to find something that I knew she would love.

Family Birthday dinnersĀ  have been a tradition since our kids were small. Her birthday dinners are easy. She typically wants the same entree every time, Homemade Lasagna. Her dad is the expert when it comes to that.

The Flowers came from H-E-B. What a cute flower arrangement in a boot. Adorable. Only in Texas.

Here is a glimpse into her 17th birthday dinner:

Appetizer: Crab cake balls served with Spicy Ranch with Tabasco sauce. I picked up the Crab Cake balls from a local meat market in Cypress.

This new dressing paired perfectly. Dressing is by Marzetti. Really good.

Dessert: Chocolate Brownie topped with Italian sweet cream cold foam, drizzle with dark chocolate syrup. OMG so good. I am not even a chocolate person but this dessert was superb.

Entree: My husbandĀ  is the expert Lasagna maker. This has been our daughter’s favorite birthday dinner since she was really small. So sweet that she looks forward to this. He doesn’t make it often because it’s so special to her birthday dinner.

It was a great dinner. We loved celebrating our girl. This tradition never gets old. After Dinner she opened more presents. Spoiled but she is worth it. She is a great kid and a good student.

I want to end this blog post to speak to moms of 17 year old kids. Soak up these last few high school years. It feels like its flying bye so fast. My biggest worry as a mom is, am I doing all that I can to prepare her to be on her own in college. I pray daily for my kids especially for my teenager as I know that there is so much that they deal with and are surrounded by. But God reminds me that He loves her more than I do and He has a perfect plan for her life. Moms pray earnestly for your children. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16 NIV). Keep praying and be intentional about talking and spending time listening to your teenager. If you will listen, you will be surprised how much you will hear. Plus it let’s you know where they stand on everything. This will allow you to continue to deposit little nuggets and know how to pray for them.
