Dat Dog was a highly anticipated restaurant that was coming to the Lafayette downtown area. The opening of Dat Dog happened a few weekends ago and we were super excited. I didn’t make it to the opening but once I knew it was opened I scheduled a day in my schedule to check out the restaurant.
I first heard of Dat Dog during one of my visits to New Orleans. Though I didn’t try the New Orleans locations, once I heard a location was opening in Lafayette, I would not pass up the opportunity to try the deliciousness that they serve.
My mom and I arrived at Dat Dog a little before the big lunch rush. The colorful exterior and interior was eye catching and welcoming.
The staff greeted us with a smile as we walked in. As we approached the counter to order, I loved the visual, colorful menu board. I had already perused the menu before arriving so I knew exactly what I wanted.
Their menu offered hot dogs, veggie dogs, sausages and fries. With over 20 toppings to choose from, you can create your very own food creation.
The first item we tried was the Sea Dog special. Beer-Battered Cod Fish, Onions, Tomatoes, Homemade Tartar Sauce and Yellow Mustard. The fish was fried to perfection. The batter on the fish was perfect not thick. The Sea Dog was presented nicely.
Next the Field Roast Italian is an eggplant vegan sausage with fennel and garlic spice. The toppings I chose were grilled onions, creole mustard, Sriracha mayo. Oh my word when I say that this vegan sausage was impressive and I’m not even a vegetarian. So good!!!! The toppings paired perfectly with the vegan sausage.
We tried the Crawfish Etouffee fries which were fries topped with Etouffee, tomatoes, sour cream and parsley. My fave of the two fries we chose.
The WTF Fries is an order of fries that are topped with chili, cheese, onions, Jalapeños, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. Pretty good. Almost a meal in itself.
The Classic Dat Chicken was superb!! A fried chicken breast, jalapeños, mother in law slaw and chick sauce. Delicious. Fried perfectly and topped with the slaw and jalapeño a good choice.
Overall the service was amazing. The food was delicious. Each Dog was superb, each served on a buttery, toasted bun, my goodness. When I say fresh, I mean it. The food was made to order. Delivered to the table piping hot.
With many options to choose from, there is something on the menu for everyone.

I definitely went to the soft-opening and got the same veggie dog. The texture was… what you’d come to expect from a veggie sausage, but once you get past that, the taste is Ah. MAZING. and the bread, oh Lord, the bread!
