Velvet Taco

My family and I often go out for lunch after church on Sundays. Velvet Taco was on my list of places to dine that I have seen on Instagram.

Velvet Taco is a fast casual restaurant serving tacos that are elevated with a variety of flavor profiles.

The exterior of the Velvet Taco was eye catching. I love the artwork on the outside of the restaurant.

The two story option was a unique feature visually.

As we entered, we saw the menu on the wall and there was also the option of a handheld menu and the web menu as well.

The restaurant is order first and they will call your name. We placed our orders and waited for the name to be called.

There is an outdoor space on both levels which is nice. We sat outside on the second story because the first story outdoor space was full.

The restaurant has an elevator which is also nice to carry your food up.

I will say, I didn’t like that the restaurant didn’t have runners to deliver the food to the table. But that’s just my preference.

We started with the Queso Blanco. The Queso consisted of the Velvet Taco heat sauce, salsa verde, charred tomato salsa, cilantro sprig and blue chips.

The queso was very good. The kids really enjoyed it.

Our son ordered the Chicken and Waffle Taco. The taco consisted of a waffle tortilla filled with crispy tenders, peppered bacon, peppercorn gravy, green apple slaw, maple syrup, red chile aioli and chives.

This taco was unique and my son loved it. The cinnamon waffle was a nice twist and actually worked well with the different ingredients.

Our daughter went with a more traditional type of taco, the Kobe Bacon Burger.

This taco consisted of peppered bacon, smoked cheddar, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, kobe beef and the velvet sauce on a flour tortilla.

She really enjoyed the taco. She dipped it in the queso cheese and in her words, another level.

My husband and I shared a few different tacos.

The Shrimp and Grits taco. This taco consisted of Blackened Shrimp, crispy pepper jack cheese grits, charred tomato salsa, creole remoulade, topped with micro cilantro on a corn tortilla.

This taco was different. I love the different textures in the taco. Really good.

We also tried the Fish n’ Chips. The fish in chips consisted of a beer battered Atlantic Cod, Pea tendrils, malted French fries, napa slaw on a Flour tortilla topped with Curry Mayo.

This taco had a bit of an indian vibe to me with the curry mayo on top. Really good. I loved the Pea tendrils on top. Beautiful.

The unique ingredients and flavors worked nicely together.

We also had the Korean Fried Rice. This taco consisted of egg fried rice, Korean pork, Pickled red onion, red chile aioli, grilled pineapples, jalapeños and cilantro on a flour tortilla.

The Korean Fried Rice taco is a new one. This taco was different, a unique flavor profile. I like the heat on this one. Ingredients that I don’t typically have on a taco, but it worked.

We also tried the WTF, (World Taco Feature) Braised Short Ribs Taco. This taco consisted of Braised short ribs, chile mashed potatoes, demi-glace, crispy red onions, jalapeño and flour tortilla.

I love short ribs. The short ribs were prepared nicely taste wise. The taco was good. Visually it lacked color compared to the others we had.

Fresh cilantro or parsley and a drizzle would have brightened it up.

The WTF options change weekly.

The menu at Velvet Taco also boost of Vegan options, a kids menu and delicious side items that can be enjoyed as a meal.

The food was really good. The tacos were made with fresh ingredients. I love the uniqueness of each taco. Most of the tacos were pretty and visually attractive.

The service was not great. They didn’t welcome the customers when they came in, just kind of threw the orders on the pick up counter and walked away.

Which is kind of sad, because the food was really good. They have great unique taco offerings which we loved.

Being a fast casual restaurant doesn’t mean you don’t have to offer good customer service. You actually have to worked harder because there are so many fast casual restaurants in the Houston area.

We visited the Montrose location. There are a few more locations in the Texas area. Visit their website for more information.

Velvet Taco in the Montrose area is located at 907 Westheimer, Suite A, Houston, TX 77006.
